Costa Rican Social Security System

General Information

The Center of Strategic Development and Information on Health and Social Security (CENDEISSS) is the branch of the  "Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social" (CCSS) responsible of ruling the training, research and information for  educational purposes of the institutional human resources.

This center is located besides the Mexico Hospital in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, and was inaugurated on May 25th, 1974.  It was originally conceived by its main proponent, Dr. Guido Miranda Gutiérrez, as a center for teaching and research intended to train personnel in Health Sciences.

The CENDEISSS is today a branch of the Management Medical Division of the CCSS, and has approximately ninety employees.  It functions as the transversal axis in the training of more that 35.000 employees of the most various professions and technical, administrative, financial and legal disciplines, as well as people in the area of health sciences of the CCSS.

This center is responsible of controlling and regulating of a wide variety of activities, among them, the following:

-          To evaluate and recommend the benefits of having trainings in national and international centers.

-          To control and regulate, closely interacting with diverse institutions of superior education, issues related to educational programs that confer a degree in health sciences which are conducted in scenarios of the CCSS.

-          To plan, control and regulate the Post Graduate Program on Medical Specialties (Residencies), in coordination with the Post Graduate Studies System of the University of Costa Rica.

-          To coordinate, promote and conduct courses, trainings and internships for technical or professional improvement.

-          To promote and coordinate institutional activities in the area of international technical cooperation.

-          To investigate the needs on training of the human resources of the institution so as to conduct the appropriate strategic planning

-          To regulate and provide educational approval to training activities promoted by the institution.

-          To train Auxiliary Personnel for hospital direct care and Technical Assistants on Primary Care, both at the central and regional level

-          To educate and spread the fundamental principles on clinical bioethics and the regulations regarding research with human beings.
